Reverse ageism: How ageism affects young people

When we talk about ageism, the focus is often on how the more mature population is ostracized from the workplace, pushed out as if their ageing is some toxic spore infecting the organization, like mold spreading through pipes. However, a striking reality is often overlooked. Young professionals also experience ageism in the workplace.

Ageism is any form of discrimination based on a person’s age. Young professionals are often doubted or overlooked for career opportunities simply because of their youth. I have experienced ageism in the workplace. Particularly from clients who doubted my expertise simply because of my youth. They repeatedly asked for my credentials and had an extensive list of questions about my training. However, by the end of our interaction they were impressed by my accomplishments at such a young age. Good on them for doing their due diligence, right? I’ve heard horror stories of young professionals who were plainly rejected by clients for being too young.

Did it ever occur to you, that a more mature person with the same credentials as a young professional may have the same years of experience? Yes, it’s possible they graduated at the same time! Some would say, “they need to pay their dues” but I challenge you to think of the advantages young persons bring to any industry. From new perspectives, methods and insights which may benefit your organization. It’s not young versus old, we each bring something special to the organization and can contribute in different ways. These differences should be used to garner competitive advantage.
